Oldonyo Lengai (Mountain of God)
Olonyo Lengai is the only volcano in the world that sometimes erupts natrocarbonatite lava a highly fluid lava that contain almost no silicon.It will take 5 hours to be at Oldonyo lengai Mountain from Moshi.Normally we starting to climb at the midnight from lake Natron it is just possible to reach the summits by dawn at a gentle pace.
The ascent of lengai is demanding an account of the day time heat,lack of water,steep and unstable slope of ash and crumly rocks.From the summits of Oldonyolengai you can see Mount Kilimanjaro to the East side and Ngorongoro Crater to the west side.
Oldonyo lengai means ‘Mountain of God’ in the laguage of the Maasai people who inhabit this area.This Mountain its not technical climb,but it is a very demanding and sometimes dangerously steep walk and scramble,you should be fit strong and above all very determined.
Olonyo Lengai 2-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Drive to Mto wa Mbu and passing Engaruka which is one of the historical villages. Once you get there you will be able to see East Africa's only active mountain Oldonyo Lengai, Kerisimasi & Rift Valley Escarpment. Around midday you will arrive at World View campsite, it's best to rest for a few hours then take a trek to the waterfalls hidden in the western wall of the Rift Valley. Dinner and rest for a few hours. At midnight drive to trail head and start the climb to summit (5 hours).
Day 2
After descending from the mountain have breakfast and drive to the lake Natron one of the major flamingo breeding ground in East Africa, then drive to Arusha. You can enjoy a half day tour or check back into a hotel to retire for the rest of the day.
